Tooth enamel can become stained and discoloured for various reasons. Teeth whitening is a very popular and effective way to brighten your smile. Here at Dental on York, we offer two teeth whitening treatment options:
- In-chair Teeth Whitening
- At-home Teeth Whitening
In-chair Teeth Whitening
After professionally cleaning your teeth, we’ll place a rubber dam in your mouth to protect your gums and then apply a bleaching gel to your teeth. We activate this gel using a special light. The procedure usually takes about an hour. In-chair teeth whitening tends to be a faster option than at-home treatments because our dentists can use higher concentrations of the whitening agent. Your dentist will recommend further treatments where appropriate for your specific needs.
At-home Teeth Whitening
This option still requires a professional clean at our dental surgery before treatment. After cleaning, we’ll take impressions of your teeth and use these to make custom-fitted trays for your mouth. We’ll provide you with instructions on how to use these trays with a special whitening gel at home. We usually recommend wearing the gel-filled trays for about one hour per day, but treatment recommendations may vary according to your individual circumstances. The entire process tends to take about two weeks. Your dentist will recommend further treatments where appropriate for your specific needs.
How long do whitening results last?
The longevity of your results will vary, depending on your circumstances. However, for many people, results last from 1-2 years. Your dentist can give you specific advice about how long your results are likely to last.
It’s important to consult with a qualified dental professional before embarking upon teeth whitening. Your dentist can help you better understand the causes of stains and discolouration, which teeth whitening options are available to you and what course of treatment is likely to achieve your desired smile.
